I think it’s reasonable to say that Marjorie Fair’s record label believes in frontman Evan Slamka’s songs. Witness the list of talent called in to augment the band. Not one but two generations of super-session drummers (Jim Keltner and Joey Waronker), not one but two producers of choice to the finest alt-songwriters (Rob Schnapf and Jon Brion), and a fifth Beatle (Billy Preston). Slamka merits such heavyweight back-up because he can create the kind of slightly melancholic, emotionally charged rock that turned Coldplay into world-beaters. The evidence here is on the Abbey Road airiness of Don’t Believe and the intense guitar work of Halfway House. If the album has a fault, it’s the insistence on trying to conjure similarly big stadium choruses out of slighter songs, such as Silver Gun, that may have benefited from greater restraint.
